While all centered instructions are part of the community of learning each have different elements and roles. Teachers who use a learner centered instruction with their classroom will use a theme based curriculum. Teachers will understand each child's background knowledge, interest, and cultural values and apply them to classroom activities. Restaurant role playing in the dramatic play learning center is a good example. I am currently not teaching, but I have used a theme based curriculum in the past.
Another centered instruction teachers may use is a knowledge. The knowledge centered instruction introduces facts and ideas to the students. Students understand the material and are guided to learn information and not just memorize.
Both learner and Knowledge will have assessments. An assessment can be formative or summative. Formative assessments provide information at a classroom level and are done through observation or journals. Summative assessments are quite different; they provide information at a school or program level and are done through state testing or bench marks. Although different both evaluate and provide information for student success.
